Bengaluru : Former Chief Minister of the state and senior politician SM Krishna (92) passed away on Tuesday.
Krishna’s health deteriorated at 2 am this morning. The family informed the doctors about the breathing problems. The doctors immediately arrived at the house. At 3:30 am, the doctors informed about SM Krishna’s death. It is said that the family decided to take him from home to the hospital for a checkup this morning.
Arrangements have been made for the final darshan at the Sadashivanagar residence all day today, and the body will be shifted to his hometown Maddur after 1 pm tomorrow.
Police have been alerted near the house of S.M. Krishna in Sadashivanagar and have barricaded the roads surrounding the residence and provided police security.
SM Krishna, whose full name was Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, was born on 1 May 1932 in a single-parent family in a village called Somanahalli in Maddur taluk of Mandya district of Karnataka. He completed his primary education in his hometown, completed his secondary education at Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala, Mysore, completed his Bachelor of Arts from Maharaja’s College, Mysore, and completed his law degree from University Law College. He also graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, USA, and the Law School of George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Krishna entered electoral politics by contesting as an independent candidate from Maddur assembly constituency in 1962. After that, he joined the ‘Praja Socialist Party’. But in the 1967 elections, he lost to Congress’ MM Gowda from Maddur. When the sitting MP died in 1968, he entered national politics by defeating the Congress candidate in the by-election to Mandya Lok Sabha constituency.
After the 1968 by-election, he was elected as an MP three times from the Mandya constituency. He had won the elections as a Congress candidate in 1971 and 1980. SM Krishna’s role was important in keeping Mandya a Congress stronghold at that time.
SM Krishna, who was a strong leader in the Congress throughout his political career, resigned from the Congress party on January 29, 2017, towards the end of his political career. He had officially joined the BJP in March 2017.
