Belgaum: The Karnataka government has reported 641 cases of digital fraud this year, resulting in losses of over Rs 109 crore, State Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Thursday.
Responding to a question from MLC K Pratapsimha Nayakin the ongoing winter session of the Legislative Council at Suvarna Soudha in Belgaum, Home Minister G Parameshwar said, ‘641 cases of digital fraud have been reported in the state, resulting in a loss of more than Rs 109 crore.
Similarly, the state accounts for one-fourth of the total digital arrest cases in the country. Out of this, Rs 9.45 crore has been recovered in the scam. He said that 27 people have been arrested in connection with these cases.
Similarly, to combat digital fraud, the state is disseminating information through Facebook, WhatsApp and ‘Cyber Awareness’messages. He urged the public to immediately report cyber fraud through the toll-free helpline number, 1930.
Social media accounts and groups selling “fake SIM cards” and bank accounts to defraud the public have been identified. The minister said 268 Facebook groups, 465 Telegram groups, 15 Instagram accounts and 61 WhatsApp groups related to these crimes have been deactivated.
State Home Minister G Parameshwara also said that the government is also conducting awareness programs in schools and colleges to educate the public about various types of cyber fraud.
